The first time I watched this video I was sick—even knowing it happens on a daily basis, I found myself appalled by the sheer extent of the alterations. However, it also served as a great reminder for why it’s dangerous to look to the media for the definition of what beauty “looks like”; with the advent of Photoshop, and other such alteration software, it’s become extremely easy to nip, tuck, and enhance an individual without ever sending them to a plastic surgeon.
That said, the above video is an extreme case of this and, obviously, the folks at “Upworthiest” received precisely what they hoped from bringing it to our attention—a viral video that increased both the traffic to and exposure of their website.
In the end though, the end message is clear: don’t trust what you see because, to coin an old phrase, “maybe it’s real, maybe it’s Maybeline”…or, in this case, some really creative photoshopping.
